[Robert Wright, The Moral Animal] Who or what is the puppeteer? In one word, it is nature. How does nature pull our strings? What are the strings? The strings are our sentiments. You have not eaten for a while, you are getting low on energy. Low energy is not good for survival. Nature pulls a string: you feel hungry and go in search of food. It is winter, and you have gone outside without a coat. Low temperatures are not good for survival. Nature pulls a string: you feel cold and go back to a warmer place. You twist your ankle. A damaged ankle is not good for survival, it would be better if the damage could be repaired. Nature pulls a string: you feel pain and avoid using your ankle. You see a beautiful woman, a potential mate. This is an opportunity for reproduction. Nature pulls a string: you want to be with her. "We are survival machines, robot machines, blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. This is a truth which still fills me with astonishment. But I don't think he is right. In which direction would we rebel? Where would that sense of direction come from, if not from our evolutionary history? So, I am an organic robot, but I am not the only one. Is it good to be an organic robot? Well, our cultures tell us that indeed this is the case. Is it good to be a clock? Is it good to be a beetle in the forest?
